A few weeks ago, my boyfriend and I took a road trip to Washington, DC. We were there for an advocacy conference and were away from the hotel room most of the time, so I had the fun experience of trying to find a public restroom I could use. It did not go well. For …

Sometimes, when you have a disability, other people feel that they have a right to control or affect your body in ways that are unnecessary, unhelpful, and at times even painful, emotionally and physically. Strangers pat us on the head in public, acquaintances we don’t know too well hug us, and sometimes people provide physical …

A Note About Language

Although people-first language has previously been thought of as the least offensive way to discuss disability, I prefer to use identity-first language through terms like “disabled person” instead of “person with a disability.” I find that this makes my writing easier to read and it legitimizes disability as a positive identity trait rather than one that negates humanity. I do not mean to invoke any negative feelings about appropriate terminology.  Please contact me through my contact page if I am using otherwise inappropriate or offensive terms.
