“So, I hired a caregiver — now what?”

On February 26, 2018February 26, 2018 By GabriellaIn Caregivers, Social1 Comment

When I moved away from home to go to college, I had to make a rapid adjustment from being at home with my parents to living independently with the help of hired caregivers. At times, I did not handle it well. I remember wishing that I had some kind of instruction manual to help me …

On Finding a Public Restroom

On June 29, 2017 By GabriellaIn Health, Personal, Social1 Comment

A few weeks ago, my boyfriend and I took a road trip to Washington, DC. We were there for an advocacy conference and were away from the hotel room most of the time, so I had the fun experience of trying to find a public restroom I could use. It did not go well. For …

A Note About Language

Although people-first language has previously been thought of as the least offensive way to discuss disability, I prefer to use identity-first language through terms like “disabled person” instead of “person with a disability.” I find that this makes my writing easier to read and it legitimizes disability as a positive identity trait rather than one that negates humanity. I do not mean to invoke any negative feelings about appropriate terminology.  Please contact me through my contact page if I am using otherwise inappropriate or offensive terms.
